What You Need To Know About Eid al-Adha, Sallah 2020
This year’s Eid al-Adha, Sallah 2020 is significant given the Coronavirus, COVID-19 pandemic and what many will regard as the new normal in the way people are doing things around the world.
The pandemic has brought about the need for people to sacrifice the lifestyle they were used to and coincidentally, Eid al-Adha means the feast of Sacrifice, it is celebrated on the tenth day of the lunar month of Dhul Hijjah.
Meaning of Eid al-Adha, Sallah
Eid al-Adha is known all over the world as Al-Eid Al-Kabir or the major Feast which will allow those who can afford it to sacrifice an animal in remembrance of Prophet Abraham.
Sallah is distinguished from Al-Eid Al-Saghir which is the Minor Feast also known as Eid al-Fitr and it is celebrated by Muslims two months and ten days before the Major Feast.
On the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims proceed to the plains of the Mount of `Arafah, outside Makkah and they spend their time totally in worship, but the Coronavirus pandemic won’t allow the convergence of pilgrims for the 2020 Hajj.
Before the pandemic, the pilgrims having offered their prayers at Muzdalifah, proceed to the three pillars to cast seven stones at the symbols of Satan early in the morning of the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah.
Also, Eid al-Adha honours the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience to God’s command, but, before Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, God provided a lamb to sacrifice instead.
In commemoration of this intervention, an animal, usually, a sheep, is sacrificed ritually and divided into three parts. One share is given to the poor and needy, another is kept for home, and the third is given to relatives.
Date For Eid al-Adha 2020
Eid al Adha 2020 or Sallah 2020 is expected to be celebrated on Friday, 31 July 2020 though the actual date is dependent on the sighting of the moon of Dhul Hijjah, 1441, the 12th and last month of Islamic Calendar.
Islamic scholars advised Muslim faithful to ensure that animal to be sacrificed has to be an adult and should have reached the age stipulated in Shariah.
The animals that are good for the sacrifice include Goat, either male or female, of at least one year of age, Sheep, either male or female, of at least six months of age, cow, ox, buffalo of at least two years of age or male or female Camel of at least five years of age.
