What Is Social Distance. Can it Helps Fight Covid 19

Share

Most countries are dealing with the covid19 pandemic, and governments around the world are advising its citizens to social Distance themselves to reduce the chances of contracting the virus. This was to stop the spread of the Covis-19.

This is even more important now that most schools have closed down to most children. After the directive of the Nigerian government to ban religious gatherings, schools, parties, occasions, the Nigerian Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) has released a guideline for Nigerians to social Distance from each other.

What Is Social Distance

But what exactly is the advice on social Distance – and who should be engaging in it the most? How can we expect to stop the spread of coronavirus?

Social distancing can be explained to mean the non-pharmaceutical infection control actions intended to stop or slow down the spread of a contagious disease (Covid 19). The main reason for social distancing is to reduce the possibility of citizens of contracting the infection or virus. This is to minimize disease transmission, Morbidity, and, ultimately, mortality.

So, should we start panicking? Not yet. Even though things are dangerous, and we may feel helpless, there is still much to do to help mitigate things.

Every country has a slightly different policy when it comes to observing social distancing. However, the general principles are similar.

Well, social distancing is the thing we Nigerians should engage, and by we, I mean everyone.

Professional advice varies, but it does include things like: Working from home if possible; traveling only when necessary, especially on public transport or for overseas trips. Avoiding social venues like Malls and night clubs; avoiding gatherings of large groups of people; restricting visitors; and, if you do, go out in public, maintaining a safe distance from others – usually around three meters.

Since covid 19 is spread mainly through respiratory droplets (especially when people cough or sneeze), maintaining a bit of Distance will help to decrease the spread of the virus.

Social distancing aims to reduce the amount of interaction people have while allowing them to carry out their necessary day-to-day activities. It also helps reduce the chances of picking the virus up and then spreading it to others.

These measures are especially necessary for people at higher risk of severe disease if they get coronavirus. This might include the elderly, especially those over 70, people with significant long-term medical problems like lung disease, heart disease, weak immune system, diabetes, neurological problems, kidney disease, and pregnant women.
