It was a terrible night for an England club like West Ham United’s European dream came to an end after they were beaten by German side Eintracht Frankfurt in their Europa League semi-final. Defender Aaron Cresswell and boss David Moyes were both sent off on a heated night in Germany.
David Moyes‘ side lost their home leg 2-1 but started brightly until Aaron Cresswell pulled down Jens Petter Hauge, who would have been through on goal. The player was already on the yellow card the referee changed hiding after a Video Assistant Referee check was made, and the card was then upgraded to a red.
That began the downfall of the English Premier League side. The German side – who enjoyed a marvelously colorful partisan home support – went ahead when the unmarked Rafael Borre hammered home from Ansgar Knauff’s low ball.
The night got even worse for West Ham United when a frustrated Moyes booted the ball at a ball boy and was shown a straight red card. West Ham United had a few chances in the closing stages with Michail Antonio forcing a save from Kevin Trapp and Tomas Soucek heading wide. The Hammers’ wait for a major trophy will tick over into the 43rd year. It also means no place in next season’s Champions League.
It was a terrible night for English Premier League clubs as they all lost the chance to have a final in all the European competitions as Leicester City was beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Jose Mourinho’s Italian AS Roma in the Uefa Conference League.
While the Hammers lost in the Europa League only Liverpool who is playing Real Madrid in the Uefa Champions League made it to the final. It would have been an all-English final but Manchester City was beaten by La Liga champions Real Madrid.
