I’m sure we have all experienced uncomfortable moments with someone inappropriately touching another person sexually. It has happened in public transportation, in clubs, house parties, work, school, etc.
These experiences are not gender-specific, but they are suffered by more women than men. Something that causes inappropriate sexual behavior is a lack of education about what consent is. This post is my attempt at explaining what sexual consent it.
Sexual consent is an agreement to participate in sexual activity. Before being sexual with someone, you need to know if they want to be sexual with you too. It’s also important, to be honest with your partner about what you want and don’t want.
One issue I have noticed is that some see the word “Consent” and get scared, assuming it can be a huge turn-off. But consenting can be a form of dirty talk. “Do you want me to suck on your nipples?” “Do you want me to kiss you?”
Consent is mandatory and it’s also sexy, although the latter is less important. It’s vital to remember that even during a sexual experience, asking for permission before heading to new boundaries can be an extreme turn on. There are many ways to give consent. It doesn’t have to be verbal, but a verbal agreement can help all parties respect each other’s boundaries with more clarity.
Asking for consent doesn’t have to be awkward or complicated. It also doesn’t have to interrupt a passionate sexual encounter. It is essentially communicating and asking for permission. Some might say asking for consent is scary, but to put it plainly, sex without consent is rape.
Each of us is responsible for making sure we have an agreement in every sexual situation. If you are unsure, it is important to clarify what your partner feels about the sexual situation before initiating or continuing sexual activity.
Consent is sexy and is a lighthearted campaign designed to raise awareness as well as careful consideration of the values we’re teaching as a culture. The aim is to make it clear that nobody has ownership over another person’s body and it’s something a lot of Nigerians are not aware of.
I can clarify any blurry lines in the comment section if you have any questions.
