Watford has confirmed the signing of Nigerian Super Eagles first choice Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye from the Eredivise side.
They confirmed this news on their official website said: “Watford FC is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement to sign highly-rated young goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, on a five-and-a-half-year deal that will begin on January 1, 2022.”
The 22-year-old Nigeria goalkeeper will be joining the ‘Hornets’ for an undisclosed fee from the Dutch side of Sparta Rotterdam. He is to return on loan to the club till the end of the 2021/2022 season.
The 6ft6In shot-stopper is a regular between the sticks for the dutch outfit this season and making 13 appearances as a first-choice goalkeeper for the Nigerian National team since his debut in a 1-1 draw with Brazil in 2019.
Okoye Makes Watford Move
He is of German-Nigeria descent who was born in Germany to a Nigerian Father and a German Mother.
The Nigerian International started his career in Germany through the youth ranks at Borussia Monchengladbach, then proceeded to play with Bayer Leverkusen and Fortuna Dusseldorf before moving to Sparta Rotterdam in the summer of 2020.
At the end of last season, he won the Sparta player of the season award for his notable contribution to helping the team finish 8th in the Eredivisie.
The shot-stopper will join the contingent of Nigerians to have represented the Golden Boys, as they currently have Nigerian Internationals in William Troost-Ekong, Emmanuel Dennis and Oghenekaro Etebo.
