The West African Examinations Council, WAEC has reeled out strict sanctions to discourage Candidates from engaging in examination malpractice during the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE.
The examination body said it has approved appropriate sanctions in all established cases of malpractice in accordance with the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the Council’s examination after diligent deliberations.
The Council abolished the rules that stated that the entire results of candidates involved in proven cases should be cancelled, while subject results of those involved in proven cases be similarly cancelled.
Also, candidates found guilty of cheating will be barred from sitting for the Council’s examination for a certain number of years.
Meanwhile, some schools will be derecognised for a specified number of years or have their recognition completely withdrawn.
Furthermore, supervisors that were found wanting in the discharge of their examination duties will be formally reported to their employers and blacklisted.
It was gathered that WAEC approved the new punishment among other sanctions during the 70th meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) held in Lagos.
