The former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba has questioned the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to sack the Nigerian head coach Gernot Rohr.
Ikpeba said this on the popular Monday Night Football on Supersport TV yesterday.
It has been rumoured that the NFF has decided to let the German tactician go despite qualifying the Super Eagles to the AFCON and Worldcup playoff.
The clamour for his sack is coming after an abysmal performance in games against the Central African Republic and Cape Verde.
Ikpeba has advised against the move and implored the football federation to give him a chance to lead the team to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Making a case for Rohr, he said it is less than 48 days to our first match at AFCON, and the speculations for his sack is surprising.
“Rohr has done the needful by qualifying the team for the World Cup playoffs.” He said.
Admitting that we were not brilliant against Cape Verde, he said, “Why not wait till after the AFCON and decide on his future.”
He said sacking him now might end up being a disaster if the next coach fails at the AFCON.
“Who takes the blame? What will the new manager change? What changed in 2002 and 2010?” he questioned.
He said if Rohr is sacked, this thing will happen again as he worries that Nigerians forget history, which should not be.
Referencing the sack of Shuaibu Amodu after lamentations saying he was not good enough.
“Gernot Rohr has been too soft with the players; the NFF can help him,” he said.
