Louis van Gaal who was one time Ajax coach has accused his former side of trying to use the coronavirus pandemic “for their own gain”. Ajax technical director Marc Overmars called for the termination of the Eredivisie season following the constant cases of the coronavirus.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona player was majorly concerned about the Dutch football association KNVB when it issued a statement saying they will follow UEFA’s direction to attempt to finish the season. The season was scheduled to finish on the 3rd of Auguest this year.

Recently UEFA released a statement stating that they do not have plans to end the season on or before the initial date which is August 3rd. Also, the president Aleksander Ceferin had been misquoted by some social media users.

Overmars said in an interview “I’m comparing the KNVB and UEFA with the sentiments of American president Donald Trump a week ago when he thought the economy was more important than the coronavirus.” According to him he said many people are dying daily in thier country, it will only be wise if they just terminate the league and give the league leaders the title.

Ajax are currently leading the Eredivisie league but with goal difference, they are above AZ Alkmaar who are second on the table. Luis Van Gaal is on the opinion that Ajax are only trying to use the coronavirus pandermic for their own personal gain.

They have both played 25 games and have 56 points each so Van Gaal is on the opinion that if the league is terminated and Ajax given the league like the Belgium league did it will not be fair. Club Brugge which was given their league are topping their league with 15 points and so it can be understandable to give them the league.

This coming Luis Van Gaal, a former manager of Ajax who coached Overmars at Ajax during their Champions League-winning season in 1994/95, makes it fair. “If it is established that the coronavirus has been defeated, you first have to finish the current competition,” Van Gaal told the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper.

“Sports exists to find a winner, not to say after 25 matches we cut things off and Ajax is champion. But while the government has also been following the experts for weeks, some football clubs suddenly say that it is not possible – Ajax first.

“Clubs that misuse this corona crisis for their own gain and then make it a public health statement. I’m a man who can’t take that.” Van Gaal stands on the belief that UEFA’s decision to postpone Euro 2020 until the summer of 2021 will give clubs enough time for league to be completed.

“You can also play the season out in June or July,” Van Gaal added. “There is plenty of time this summer, the European Championship is off the calendar. And if UEFA and FIFA are willing to change rules and provide space, well then get started.”
