Regina Ogali is a seasoned Professor in Organic/Pharmaceutical Chemistry and will be the first female to assume the post of vice-chancellor in the university even though it is on acting bais.

However, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU UNIPORT branch has called for the reconstitution of the school’s Governing Council. They condemned the action of the federal government on dissolving the existing governing council without creating another one immediately. In the statement released by ASUU, the absence of a Governing Council in the school has created room for vacuum and in a way makes the Vice Chancellor the sole administrator of the Institution.

The University of Port Harcourt was established in 1975 but was named so in 1977. It currently runs courses across 10 faculties and has had about 12 Vice Chancellors from its inception.
