Under 17 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria Defeats USA, Qualifies for Semi-finals

The Flamingos of Nigeria beat the United States of America 4-3 on a penalty shoot-out to book a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing Fifa Under 17 woman’s Youth World Cup in India. The United States of America has a total of 24 shots on target compared to the Flamingos of Nigeria’s seven shots on target. The Nigerian team are in the semi-final for the first time in their history, they finished second in their group following Germany.

They will face either Tanzania or Colombia in the semi-finals. Germany will face Brazil who beat the host nation India 4-0. Nigeria got their goal from the penalty spot before the United States of America equalised a few minutes before the halftime whistle. The game went on as Nigeria held their strong attack and forced the game to a full-time draw. There was no extra tie since they are young and so they moved to penalty shout-out.

The United States of America started the penalty and found the back of the net while the Nigerian followed in the goal-scoring. The second penalty taker for the USA played the ball out of the reach of the Nigerian keeper and also the goalpost as the ball went out. Nigeria did well to score theirs and took the lead to 2-1.

One Nigerian player, however, missed one but the skipper of the United States of America who was the last person to play for her country missed the ball as the Nigeria goalie caught the ball.

The last player to play for Nigeria came up and put the ball beyond the reach of the United State of America goalie and made the sores 4-3 to send the Flamingos to the semi-finals for the first in their history.
