UEFA Suspends Champions League and Europa League Games today Tuesday 13th March Until further notice, this is to help combat the rising effect of coronavirus in sports. The disease which started from Italy and has spread worldwide with Italy having the highest death rate in Europa and as a result they have suspended all sporting activities in their country.
The English Premier League also joined Ligue One side and the Italian Serie A to suspend their league games as well after Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta and Chelsea player Hudson-Odoi tested positive to the virus last night.
There is supposed to be champions League game by next which are the return leg of the Champions League games. Manchester United, Basel and other European clubs who are still in the Europa League played their first leg yesterday with Roma, Inter Milan, Gatefe and Sevilla having their own games postponed.
Manchester City is supposed to host Real Madrid in the return leg of the UEFA Champions League while Juventus v Lyon, Barcelona v Napoli and Bayern Munich v Chelsea were also to play Tuesday and Wednesday respectively but all postponed as well.
All UEFA Youth League quarter-final matches which were supposed to be played on the 17th and 18th of March have all been counselled as well. UEFA said further decisions on the scheduling of the postponed fixtures “will be communicated in due course”.
European football’s governing body has invited representatives from all 55 of its member associations to a meeting today Tuesday and concluded that they should suspend the games for now. Over 125,000 people have been diagnosed with the virus in 118 different countries around the world. Reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) has it that the total number of deaths so far is 4,600.
