UEFA Governing Body yesterday announced a new competition which will start in 2021. It will give more clubs the opportunity to participate in European football. UEFA tweeted on Tuesday night. The move is to expand European football competitions to more countries and clubs. The name of the league will be UEFA Europa Conference League(UECL).
The introduction of the tournament will mean a reshuffle in the Europa League. Second-tier European club competition will split into two halves. It will start in 2021 and they will be playoff rounds added between the group stage and last 16 as well.
How it Will Be Played
The new Europa League competition would see one English team enter the play-offs. Scottish sides may be confined to the new UEFA Europa Conference League. While one English team will also enter the play-offs of the new tournament. It will be played on Thursday night alongside the Europa League.
The format will see eight groups of four teams, followed by the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. They will be knockout round and also the round of 16 between teams ranked second in their groups and the third-ranked teams of the UEFA Europa League groups. The new competition will feature 141 matches over 15 match weeks.
Every country’s champions will still enter the Champions League, but only teams from the 15 top-ranked countries will go into the Europa League group stages or qualifiers.
Clubs in Champions League and Europe League who are knocked out from the group stage will fall to the UECL. Qualification criteria will be based on UEFA coefficient standard criterion.
Countries like Liechtenstein who dose not have domestic leagues will only present their league winner. Clubs placed under the Europa qualification position will be selected. There will be more matches for more clubs now.
