The venue for the 2020/21 Uefa Champions League final has been fixed, and surprisingly Portugal is the strongest candidate to host the Champions League final. This is because they could not receive the guarantees of exemptions it wants to move the game to Wembley.
Uefa, UK government officials and the Football Association met on Monday and they discussed the moving of the final which is going to be between Chelsea and Manchester City from Istanbul to a more secured and safer place. According to reports, Uefa has decided they will move it from Turkey.
The reason is that Turkey is one of the countries on England’s red travel list and since both teams playing the final are all English teams, and since their fans will want to travel to watch the game, it is only wise they move it. Portugal is on the green list, so fans would be allowed to attend on 29 May.
Porto’s Estadio do Dragao stadium is the most likely venue to host the final as Uefa listed it to host it. European football’s governing body believes holding the match in Portugal will make it easier to gain access for sponsors and broadcasters.
They confirmed the switch, and so Istanbul, who was to host this year’s own, will now host 2023 final, having originally been due to host last year before it was moved to Lisbon.
