A popular Twitter user, Kelvin Odanz, has criticized Tiwa Savage, Simi and other Nigerian female artists for their lack of support for each other.
Following his observation, Kelvin noted that compared to the male artists, the females like Teni, Simi, Tiwa Savage, etc., had not helped upcoming female singers, which resulted in him asking what the issue may be.
The Twitter user using the male artists as an example pointed out that the upcoming artists discovered and groomed were helped into the industry by established male artists like Davido, Wizkid, Banky W, among others.
He asked a general question to all female artists; he said, “Which female artists was discovered, groomed and helped onto the limelight by another older established female artists. I really want to know if there are any
I am also very curious to know what Simi is doing to help females into the music industry.”
Speaking about Simi, he said that asides from her feminist-themed song” ‘woman” that appealed to women asides adding more money to her bank account, he wondered what more she was doing for women in the industry.
He questioned why it is common for men to give fellow men a platform to become successful in the industry, but when it comes to female artists, it is quite rare for them to support their fellow female that is upcoming in the industry.
Referencing to five years ago, he affirmed that people barely knew Zlatan, Naira Marley or even Bella Scmurda but presently, they own their music labels with mostly male artists signed with them.
Talking about Tiwa Savage, he said since 2012, her name has been prominent in the industry, but still, she doesn’t own a record label, why questioning why it might be so and what the barriers for successful female artists may be.
He also added that he couldn’t find any upcoming female artist Tiwa has discovered or helped in the industry.
“Just to conclude, Tiwa Savage is a more successful and recognized artist than Naira Marley globally. Their streaming numbers are evidence.
A single feature from Tiwa of an unknown upcoming female artist will be a breakthrough. Why isn’t that sort of support/grooming happening?!” Kelvin added.
