The Nigerian police force has revealed the true state of things in Modakeke and Ife towns in Osun state.

There were worries after a trending rumour went viral that some unknown gunmen ave attacked Modakeke town, while other news claimed the age-long cold war between the two neighbouring towns had been rekindled.

Across all social media platforms, the video showed residents running to safety at night and brewing fear that there could be a fresh attack in the communities.

Meanwhile, the state police spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, described the news about Modakeke and Ife as fake in a statement released in Osogbo, the state capital.

He revealed that what happened in Modakeke was a show of force by members of a vigilante group, done against thieves and hoodlums.

“I want to categorically state that it is an erroneous belief that some people came to attack people.

“The true situation is that vigilantes guarding the area against hoodlums were on routine show to alert the people of the community of their presence and assure them of safety.”

While speaking for Osun State Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, Opalola reassured the state residents of their safety, adding that the police will at all times ensure they are adequately protected.
