Nigerian Lawmaker, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has raised a motion to ensure the regulation of bleaching cream.
During Wednesday’s plenary, Tinubu challenged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC to pay keen attention to cosmetics’ formulation and distribution.
The Lawmaker tasked the NAFDAC to wake up to its responsibility to protect Nigerians against harmful cosmetics.
She expressed concern with the proliferation of small and medium enterprises and businesses that have flooded the Nigerian market with beauty products whose production are not well-regulated.
The senator raised concerns that skin lightening products are not indicating ingredients, or expiry dates to enlighten users of their content.
According to her, the Senate is worried that it is impossible to determine that hygiene, quality assurance and acceptable manufacturing practices are adhered to in the formulation of skin lightening products.
