Outgoing president of the UN GA, Maria Fernanda Espinso Garces disclosed in a joint meeting, Tijjani Muhammad Bande. As the new UN general assembly president.
The announcement was made after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa.
What Do We Know About The Latest President Of The GA?
Bande hails from Zagga in Kebbi State. He holds an M.A in Political Science from the Boston University, USA, in 1981. Furthermore, a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto, Canada, in 1987.
He was Director-General of the Center African de Formation et de Recherche Administrative pour le Development (CAFRAD) in Tangier, Morocco.
He remains active in several fora, including Chair of the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C34); Member, Advisory Board of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Center, and Chair of the ECOWAS Group (2018-2019).
Banda has been awarded several distinguish honors. Nationally and internationally. He has won merit awards and honors from institutions and governments. These including the United States and China.
Most notably, he is a recipient of Nigeria’s Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. One of Nigerias highest national awards.
The UN GA which runs for a one year tenure, will be vacated by Ms Maria Espinosa on the 17th September.
Bande said as the 74th President of the session, he would focus on the effective implementation of existing mandates. Making efficient contributions in all defined follow-up areas.
In conclusion, he also pledged to ensure that the decision reached and resolutions passed at the GA are implemented for the benefits of citizens.
