Tiga State: 37 States In Nigeria? Senate Presents Bill For New State In Nigeria

A new chapter in Nigeria’s political landscape may be on the horizon with the introduction of a bill proposing the creation of Tiga State from the current Kano State. This groundbreaking legislation, titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (Creation of Tiga State) Bill, 2024,” is spearheaded by Senator Kawu Sumaiman AbdulRahman, representing Kano South.

Originally slated for its first reading on Wednesday, July 10, the bill’s presentation was postponed to Thursday, July 11. This adjournment was a mark of respect for Hon. Olaide Adewale Akinremi, a dedicated member of the House of Representatives, who sadly passed away at the age of 51.

Kano State, located in Nigeria’s North West geo-political zone, currently boasts the highest number of states within its region. While the North East, North Central, South-South, and South West zones each comprise six states, and the South East has five, the North West already has seven states.

The creation of Tiga State could potentially reshape the administrative and political dynamics of the region. As the Senate prepares to deliberate on this bill, the nation watches closely, pondering the implications of such a significant change. Will Tiga State become Nigeria’s newest state? The coming days will reveal the answer.
