The Lords of Nigerian tertiary institutions are not just the Vice Chancellors, Rectors or Provosts as you have might be thinking. There are several tertiary institutions in the country. There is hardly a state without one. Education is a vital the country is not taken for granted. The tertiary institution is therefore the last hurdle to cross before getting to see the world beyond.

One of the factors that is responsible for the shaping of the students in the tertiary are the lecturers which I referred to as the ‘Lords of Tertiary Institutions’. Lecturers have a bigger role to perform in the institutions than any other persons. They lecture, coordinate and supervise exams and also record the outcome of the exams. Away from the tertiary institutions, the varsity dons also play a big role in the electioneering processes in the country as they observe, monitor and collate election results of those who set the pace in our nation.

The lords of the tertiary institutions are the lecturers who the students see on daily basis. Most of the lecturers come to the lecture theatres and spend time lecturing/teaching the students. They impact knowledge on various fields which they have been well versed. Some who doesn’t come to lecture theatres have a way of giving out learning materials to cover up. No matter the pedagogy, students look up to the lecturers as their ‘academic lord’. The lecturers also set the examinations to test the abilities of the students.

They decide thereafter if a student fail or pass.  As a result of this, some lecturers has found a means of becoming ‘lord’ over the students.  If you have a misunderstanding or wrongdoing with some lecturers, the exam is an avenue to deal with the student. You have to repeat the course for years if care is not taken. There has been sex for marks, bribery and other illegal acts as a result of the power of the lecturers. Impromptu is also a way of testing students’ abilities and also to bring them down. Apart from poor academic performance, students have spent extra years as a result of the lecturers will.

The Nigerian educational system among other systems has been faulty. Drastic measures must be taken to curb excesses by lecturers. The main reason they’ve been called into service should not be abandoned for self-ego or self-acquired power. Disciplinary sections should exercise their actions on students who erred but not for self reasons. The lords of the tertiary institutions should find a way of acquiring more knowledge to produce able graduates after their 4-6 years of learning rather than pruning them. Education is a major key to the growth of a nation. We must join hands to make our nation better in all sectors and solve our long list of problems.
