The Emergence Of TikTok Challenge In Nollywood In 2020

What is Tiktok challenge? Well, you to know what Tiktok is. So what is Tiktok?

TikTok is often referred to as a “lip-syncing” app, which makes it sound like it’s a karaoke experience online. But a better contrast would be Vine, the still sadly missing short-form video app from Twitter whose content lives on as compilations made from YouTube.

TikTok Challenge

While it’s true that TikTok is home to some standard lip-syncing app, it’s popularly known for its act-out memes backed by music and other sound clips, which get endlessly reproduced and remixed among its young users. The demographics of most TikTok Challenge users have been on the younger side but millennials are catching up to the trend.

Right now in Nigeria, everywhere you turn online, there is one live video happening. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter are all hotbeds for differnt live video shows and chat sessions. All the Nigerian celebrities just like the rest of the population are cooped up inside the house have resulted to using live videos to stay relevant. The Nollywood stars are all competing with each other to stay relevant with TikTok while Musical artistes are rolling out challenges to boost the awareness of their songs.

The Emergence Of TikTok Challenge In Nollywood In 2020

The most trendy of all the online challenges right now is ‘Don’t Rush’ by Young T and Bugsey, ‘BOPdaddy’ by Falz and Ns. Banks, and ‘Toosieslide’ by Drake.

The online TikTok challenge frenzy did not just start, but since Nigeria entered the lockdown, many celebrities outside and within Nigeria have tried and most have succeded to use this TikTok challenges to create content on their many platforms.

Correct me if I’mwrong but the whole rave started with ‘Something’ by WizKhalifa, featuring TY dolla$ign, The song went so viral that it was everywhere and got some people, myself included, started cringing at the lyrics of the song because we had had enough.

The next wave to hit us as we were locked inside was the TikTok Challenge. The TikTok challenge presented the fans, to see those actors who are not so good at reading scripts. In reality, some dramatic actresses have started to use it as a means of competition to show fans and other industry actors and acttresses that they are better performers, rather than leave it to their fans to be the judge. Nkechi Blessing, one of the Yoruba-Nigerian actresses, is sitting on this table with her legs crossed.

While creating content to keep the fans entertained seems rosy, I think our celebrities can do more, like their international colleagues that they try to emulate and rub shoulders with.

At this juncture, I would love to applaud Tonto Dikeh for taking the bull by the horn and going out of her comfort zone to actively reach out to the less privileged. While she might not be able to reach everyone in Abuja, the effort is seen and has been applauded by not just Nigerians but even the World Health Organization (WHO).

Even if some would suggest she did this for clout, I would encourage EVERYONE who thinks so and those who are of the opinion to overlook the good in her gesture to go out and feed the poor for clout as well.

You would agree with me that almost all celebrities, especially the females, have one foundation or the other but many have gone into hiding under the guise of social distancing since the start of the pandemic.

While practising social distancing is okay, I am yet to see a Nigerian celebrity try to use their TikTok Challenge content to raise money for COVID-19 patients or collectively come together and create a GoFundMe account similar to what P. Diddy, a.k.a. Brother Love has been doing for the people on the streets who can’t even afford to be on social media. Instead, Nigerian celebrities, as always, are waiting for some international funds to come their way as well.

Celebrities outside Nigeria aren’t sleeping and waiting for the government to come and give them a kiss  like sleeping beauty before they swing into action. They are coming together to contribute their quota by helping each other out.

Nigerian celebrities should do the same thing using their TikTok challenge and stop advising women to use their last dime to buy different shapes and sizes of dildos to pleasure themselves in hunger.
