Manchester United failed to build on their opening day demolition of Leeds United as Southampton forced them to full tie 1-1 draw at St Mary’s. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side looked full of attacking menace and threat in that 5-1 win over Leeds last week, but they failed to keep up with the pace they started within matchday 1.

Southampton Forced United to a 1-1 Draw

Southampton, who lost their first game against Everton 3-1, secured their first point in the English Premier League 2021/22 season. They saw off United’s bright start flourish and take the lead on the half-hour when Che Adams’ shot deflected off Fred beyond keeper David de Gea.

Manchester United looked to be on the charge when Mason Greenwood’s shot squirmed under Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy 10 minutes after the break. United introduced their £73m man Jadon Sancho for the disappointing Anthony Martial, but the English man could not do better.

Instead, Southampton created the best opportunity to take all three points as De Gea saved crucially from Adam Armstrong when he looked to poised to score. United is now in fourth place with four points in two games while the Saints are in the 13th position.
