Former Manchester United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a couple of issues with his coaches before he was finally sacked from Manchester United. According to reports, Manchester United assistant coaches Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna, and Mike Phelan had hoped Varane, Ronaldo and Sancho would provide United with the personnel to play an expansive brand of football in a 4-3-3 system.
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer persisted with 4-2-3-1 for most of the season before he was forced to adapt to a five-person defence after Liverpool thrashed Manchester United in October. Solskjaer then started with three central defenders against Tottenham Hotspur, Atalanta and Manchester City.
He ended up winning one, drawing one and losing the other one while still changing his formation mid-game this caused fights with his coaches as they had been pushing for him to make adjustments long before he did, according to the report.
The report also said Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna had already made up their minds that a more defensive approach was needed to reduce the club’s goals before his sack. Interim manager Michael Carrick, then a first-team coach, and assistant first-team coach KcKenna have stayed on despite Solskjaer’s sacking.
The difference was seen as Carrick’s game in charge came with a clean sheet which was only United’s third this season. His first game, in which they won 2-0, brought a much-needed improvement to the squad.
