The sports betting platform Bet9ja has become a household for Nigerian sport fanatics. From the east to the west to the north and to the south, the platform rings a bell in the hearts of fans as they squander millions everyday on the site trying to beat the odds.
With time policy makers have come to dislike the platform for various reasons. For some, the platform is viewed as a gambling site. For others, its just a place where Nigerians spend too much time wasting their income.
More so, the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports on Tuesday threatened to order the shutdown of Bet9ja office if the company failed to honour its invitation for a second time.
According to Obinna Ogba, Chairman of the Committee, this development is coming up after the review and verification of loto companies that are licensed to operate in Nigeria. Mr Ogba (PDP, Ebonyi Central) said it was unfortunate that Bet9ja refused to honour the committee’s invitation.
Clerk, write to Bet9ja again. If they did not honour our invitation, we will ask the National Lottery Commission to seal their offices.Mr. Ogba
Loto companies are not supposed to just generate money for themselves. According to Ogba, the Senate is making efforts aimed at assisting the lottery commission to generate money for the federal government.
He further stated that the committee must see Bet9ja because they cannot run away whether they like it or not.
Ogba explains that the verification process is extremely important because of numerous complaints that some loto companies do not actually have physical offices; and when they do, they most likely don’t pay the appropriate remittances to the government.
Some got the licences but they are not operating. The new regulation only gives them one year to start operations.Mr. Ogba
Thus far, only about 20 other betting companies appeared before the committee for the verification exercise. But there are a lot more loto companies than that number in Nigeria.
