Senate Orders Investigation Into Killings By F-SARS Operatives

Amid the clamor for either the total overhauling or ban of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, F-SARS, the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan has revealed what he described as the solution to the extra-judicial killings in the country.

Responding to a motion by Senator Oluremi Tinubu during Wednesday plenary, Senator Lawan said one of the solutions is to arrest and prosecute police officers who have engaged in extra-judicial killings.

Lawan said banning the F-SARS is not the solution to cases of extra-judicial killings by the Police unit. Meanwhile, some lawmakers who debated the motion noted that the abuse and human rights violations by the F-SARS operatives have reached alarming levels.

However, the Senate has directed its committees on Police and Human Rights to investigate cases of human rights violations and extra-judicial killings leveled against the F-SARS operatives.

The lawmakers also asked the police to set up hotlines for Nigerians to report abuses and human rights violations by its officials. Furthermore, the Senate asked the police to set up a monitoring unit to look into the operations of its men.

You will recall that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu had on Sunday issued a directive banning F-SARS operatives and other Tactical Squads of the Force from embarking on routine patrols ( read more here).
