They have been an update on Super Eagles winger, Samuel Kalu who collapsed on the pitch on Sunday during a Lige 1 game between Bordeaux and Marseille. The incident happened five minutes into the game. It was gathered that it was because of temperatures at the Stade Velodrome.

Bordeaux’s French goalkeeper Benoit Costil (2nd R) and Bordeaux’s French defender Laurent Koscielny (C) call for the medic as Bordeaux’s Nigerian forward Samuel Kalu lays on the ground players during the French L1 football match between Olympique de Marseille and FC Girondins de Bordeaux at The Stade Velodrome in Marseille, southern France on August 15, 2021.

Reactions to Samuel Kalu’s Collapse

After Samuel Kalu collapsed, medics carried him out on a stretcher as concerned teammates formed a human shield around him. The teammates and his opponents all came to him for the guard just like they did for Christian Eriksen when he suffered a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020.

The Nigeria player returned the pitch minutes later, but he was still very dizzy, and so he was substituted 14 minutes after his arrival. This is not the first time Samuel Kalu is collapsing on the football pitch. He collapsed in training on the eve of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations opener in Egypt in 2019 due to ‘severe dehydration.
