Everton Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov has had his assets frozen by the European Union as it announced further sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Restrictions include a “prohibition from making funds available” and an EU travel ban as well

The Usmanov-owned company USM Holdings sponsors Everton’s training ground. He also has an exclusive naming-rights option on Everton’s new stadium. Farhad Moshiri who is the chairman of USM Holdings and the owner of the club made this information known recently.

It is not yet clear what, if any, effect the move might have on the club. The club has been contacted for comment. Recently the owner of Chelsea football club Roman Abramovich was begged by some citizens of Ukraine to please help them speak to Putin the president of Russia been that they are good friends.
In its reasoning, the EU Council said: “Alisher Usmanov is a pro-Kremlin oligarch with particularly close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin”. It also said that he “actively supported materially or financially Russian decision-makers responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilization of Ukraine”.
