Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, has died at the age of 99. Buckingham Palace released a statement announcing the passing away of the Queen of England’s beloved husband on Friday morning.
Following the saddening revelation, tributes have continued to pour in from all corners of the world, including the sporting world, where Prince Philip has been eulogized glowingly.
Prince Philip was well-known in the sporting world after competing in polo and becoming a world champion carriage driver; he was also a regular at Ascot, where the Queen’s horse Estimate won the Gold Cup in 2013.
A statement from Sir Francis Brooke, Her Majesty’s representative at Ascot, reflected on the “happy memories” they have of the Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Philip was a regular attendee, alongside the Queen, at Royal Ascot, where they could celebrate multiple victories of horses she owned, including thrilling 2013 Gold Cup winner Estimate.
The FA tweeted: We have sent our deepest condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and our president, HRH The Duke of Cambridge, following the passing of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. As a mark of our respect, all flags at @WembleyStadium and St. George’s Park will fly at half-mast.
