The Federal Minister of Interior in Nigeria, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has blamed the recurring jailbreak attempts in the country on the 2020 #EndSARS protest.
The minister paid a surprise visit to the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Apapa, Lagos, on Sunday, after the recent Jailbreak at the Kuje Medium Prison facility in Abuja.
During the visit, Aregbesola admonished the Nigeria Security Personnel to remain vigilant so as to defeat criminals terrorising the country.
He further authorised the security forces to ensure that the “Ragtag Groups” attacking their facilities should not live to tell the story.
Mr Sola Fasure, the media aide to the minister, said Aregbesola directed the management of the Prisons Service to improve its efforts at gathering actionable intelligence against future attacks.
He also added that the prison attacks have been recurring since the October 2020 #EndSARS protest.
Aregbesola said, “So far, no jailbreak by inmates has been successful, we have successfully quelled all of them. What we have recurring since the #EndSARS protests of October 2020 has been a mass of people attacking our facilities from outside and setting the inmates free.
“However, I have now directed the Comptroller General of Prisons to double his efforts on intelligence gathering to fortify and prevent breaches to the prisons beyond the use of arms and force.’’
