The goal came in the 57th of the game through a perfect pass from Leeds United star player who won the man-of-the-match award, Kalvin Phillips. Southgate said he avoided the temptation of playing Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, and his decision did not fail him as he was rewarded with a lively performance from Raheem Sterling.
The Three Lions almost took an early lead when Manchester City wonder kid Phil Foden struck a post, but there were the first signs of frustration from fans and players just as Sterling made the decisive contribution with his first goal in a major tournament.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was barely tested throughout the game by the 2018 FIFA World finalists Croatia. They beat England in 2018 when they met in the World Cup semi-final in Moscow but could not replicate the result of four years ago. England is currently topping Group D, waiting for the second game, which will be against Scotland at Wembley.
