Queen Elizabeth II: Will President Buhari Rename UNN to Honour Late Monarch?

Share

Regarding the death of Queen Elizabeth II, it is still uncertain whether President Muhammadu Buhari would heed the advice of the former presidential aspirant of the Young Progressives Party, Adamu Garba, to rename University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, in honour of the late monarch.

However, some groups have considered the advice as a misguiding. A group like the apex socio-cultural organisation in Igbo land, Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Without hesitation, they demanded that the President should disregard such ill-advised opinion from a man that must now tender a convincing apology to Ndigbos for suggesting what seemed distasteful.

The group that demanded a retraction of the unguarded statement by Adamu Garba is the Chidi Ibeh-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Instead of naming UNN after the late Queen Elizabeth II to honour her name, the group, through Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary-General of the Chidi-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo, issued a press release stating that the President should rather name elsewhere in the North, or better still, change Aso Rock’s name in her honour.

The statement hinted that such a remark by Shehu possesses an insightful connotation capable of instigating conflict in Nigeria.

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has cautioned the Federal Government against renaming the foremost and most prestigious University… after the late British monarch.” The release read in bits.

So this goes back to the question if the President would name the university after the late Queen, ‘we wait’.
