Presentation Day (Episode 19): Dead Man Walking

Olinlin looked at the Taser Tony gave to him, he pointed it to the chair beside him and pressed the on button “ye!” he exclaimed the shock wave it released shocked him. He wondered what took Tony so long… before Tony left, he gave him some instructions but he was terrified to carry out Tony’s request.

His phone began to ring, it was Tony “you don do am?” “oga sir, na em I dey do now now. Na your call dey interrupt” Olinlin spoke as if he was in the middle of something “okay, okay… flash me when you finish” “okay sir”

Olinlin got out of the car and put the Taser at the back of his trouser like it was a gun. He walked discreetly around the car park and took note of a black Mercedes Benz parked in a dark spot near the entrance of the building. He stood behind the car for a while soliloquizing and hid when he saw someone walk by “do not allow anybody see you” he heard Tony’s voice in his head.

A moment later, he went back to Tony’s car and opened the boot; he tried not to vomit at the sight of the dead man’s body. He pulled the body out and put it on his shoulder; the wise thing Olinlin did was walk only in the dark path of the car park as he moved towards the Benz he was staring at earlier.

The body was very heavy on his shoulder but he was not ready to put it down and lift it again, so he persevered until he reached the Benz. He put the body down, scanned the area in case anyone was watching and used a slim iron rod to open the car door and pressed a button to open the boot.

At this point Olinlin was dying of fear but there was no stopping now, he dragged the body one last time and put it inside the boot; shutting the boot with great relief. He locked the car door and went back to Tony’s car using the same dark route that he used when coming.

He dialled his phone “oga, I don do am” “good” Tony replied and ended the call. It was a perfect plan, to dump the body of the man Mr. Henry sent to kill him in Mr. Henry’s car. He was going to find out but only when it was too late.

Olinlin entered Tony’s car scared that somebody may have seen him, he wanted to drive away from Mr. Henry’s car as far away as possible but he knew that Tony was not going to allow it, so he started the car and drove off.

He was tired of the whirlwind journey he was on, it was time he freed himself; so he drove as fast as he could but stopped when he reached a traffic light. While waiting for the light to turn red, he saw a police man and a wave of panic took over his soul.

He wanted to turn the car around but it was too late, two other cars were blocking him “e don be” he muttered as a police man walked towards him. When the police man reached his car, he wound down the window. “Weldone sir” Olinlin said with a fake smile.

“Let me see your boot” the police man went straight to the point, as Olinlin tried to leave the car and open the boot; the policeman saw a small box in the backseat “what is in the box?” he asked Olinlin who turned around to see what he was talking about.

He couldn’t believe that Tony didn’t take his gun “I think say e carry am” Olinlin muttered “can I take a look at the box? Bring it here” the policeman ordered and Olinlin obeyed. He put the box on the hood of the car and behaved as if he was struggling to open it; just as he noticed that the policeman was distracted by the box, Olinlin ran… he ran into the night like no man’s business.

He didn’t care about the car; all he cared about was saving himself from the trouble being caught with an unauthorized weapon would bring into his life. A weapon that he didn’t buy.
