The Ghana Health Service has confirmed that about 136 students in a high school have tested positive for the COVID-19 Delta variant.
According to the Director-General of the Health Service, Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, 136 out of 550 samples of students in Achimota School came out positive during the latest National COVID-19 update.
Patrick revealed that three students from the school went to the hospital in June with symptoms of influenza but ended up testing positive for COVID-19.
He said other symptomatic students and contacts were identified, listed and tested for COVID-19. Patrick noted that his Ministry is testing the students so that the infection does not spill into the community.
Meanwhile, Ghana first confirmed six cases of COVID-19 Delta variants among passengers arriving in the country on June 22 2021; the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country has increased to 96,317.
The World Health Organization had warned against the daunting new COVID-19 surges. The Director-General of WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus, said the Delta variant became the dominant strain in many countries.
According to him, terrible hospital overflow scenes are again becoming the norm in those countries with low COVID-19 vaccination coverage.
He further described the Delta variant as dangerous and required constant evaluation and careful adjustment of the public health response. EveryEvery.ng gathered that the WHO had detected Delta in at least 98 countries.
