Following speculations that the Lagos Police command is set to free Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, also known as Baba Ijesha, many social media users have expressed their views over the case of sexual assault levelled against the actor.

PUNCH Metro had reported that a Senior Police officer confirmed that a directive had been issued that the Nollywood actor should be released within the next 24 hours, adding that the suspect could not be detained indefinitely without trial.

The police officer stated that there was no case of defilement against Baba Ijesha, despite the reports on different social media platforms insinuating that the suspect had confessed to the allegation against him.

Baba Ijesha

@lollypeezle “Releasing Baba Ijesha is like putting his life in Dangedangergine walking in Oshodi and hearing a thunderous slap on his neck from the back. Lock him up.”

@General_Oluchi “According to Punch, Baba Ijesha was seen touching the body of a minor, but according to the Nigerian law, that is not enough crime to keep him behind bars. I need to understand the Nigerian interpretation of paedophilia and why it is a bailable offence.”

@dammiedammie35 “Wow, so they released Baba ijesha because there was not enough evidence to keep him there until judiciary whatever comes back from strike! But they can arrest minors on the street without any evidence and treat them like shii cos they don’t have people to speak up for them.”

@Mohnice_ “Forces beyond direct control are at work on Baba Ijesha case If he’s guilty & go unpunished, I’m sure karma will surface. No matter how slowly d wheels of Justice is grinding, when it’s time, he will surely face d wrath of God. He can escape now but will not escape d wrath of God.”

Meanwhile, EveryEvery.ng gathered that the police source said due to the ongoing strike by members of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria, courts had ceased from sitting.

According to the source, there was no case of defilement; people are just talking out of sentiment and not from the point of law.

He further stated that the police had accessed the CCTV footage, and nowhere was it captured that Baba Ijesha defiled the 14-year-old girl as claimed.

The source explained that the CCTV footage only showed him touching the victim’s body but did not have sexual intercourse with the girl.
