American actor Will Smith might end up losing his Oscars award in less than a week for hitting comedian Chris Rock on stage.
Recall that Will Smith took the headlines at the 2022 Oscars after slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage for making a joke out of his wife’s condition.
After the incident, Will Smith was announced the winner of the Best Actor in a Motion Picture at the gala.
Despite Smith apologising with a teary face during his acceptance speech, the academy has opened an official review of the incident.
Will Smith to Face Disciplinary Action
The 53-year-old actor in his apology said his actions were “unacceptable and inexcusable” and has left him “embarrassed”.
In a statement by the Academy on Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said it “condemns the actions of Mr Smith at last night’s show.”
“We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.
“The group’s standards of conduct policy states that it is categorically opposed to any form of abuse, harassment or discrimination and expects members to uphold the values ‘of respect for human dignity, inclusion, and a supportive environment that fosters creativity.
“Violations may result in suspension or expulsion from the group, revocation of Oscars, or loss of eligibility for future awards, according to the policy.”
