Onitsha Seaport Becomes Functional 40 Years After

The Onitsha seaport has become functional forty years after as it was commissioned on Tuesday, October 6 with Videos and photos from the scene showing containers being offloaded.

According to the Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Digital and New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi, the Plan is to move containers from Lagos and Onne Ports to Onitsha by barge.

Meanwhile, Ogunlesi said there is the need to assess the efficiency and do troubleshooting before it commences full operations.

He said his attention has been drawn to the information that Onitsha is now available as a port of final destination on the Maersk website.

The Presidential aide added that a vessel departing Shanghai on Saturday, October 10 has Onitsha listed as a terminal port (arrival on December 2, 2020).
