The aggrieved Northern traders have revealed the reason for the food blockade to the south-west.
The Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria said it wouldn’t tolerate continued attacks on its members in the South.
An official of the union in Kano, Awwalu Aliyu, said the food blockade was to protest against attacks on their people and not starve southerners.
Aliyu said members of the union would rather lose their food items locked up inside trucks in Jebba, Niger state, than to lose lives, adding that only living can go to the farm.
He emphasised that Yorubas and Igbos’ investments in Kano and Kaduna, running into billions of naira, are more than northerners’ entire assets in the South-West South-East and South-South.
According to him, the number of Yorubas and Ibos in the North is far more than the number of northerners in the South-West, South-East and South-South.
Earlier, the group had claimed that Northerners were killed and lost properties, especially during the recent Shasha market crisis in Ibadan, Oyo state.
You will recall that Cattle and Foodstuff dealers have embarked on a nationwide strike following the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum given to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.
The union had demanded payment of N475 billion compensation for the lives of members and properties lost during the EndSARS protest and Sasa market crisis in Ibadan, Oyo State.
