Nollywood has really evolved. If you are as old as I am, you will remember what ghosts and witches looked like then. Do you remember how love was portrayed then?
When I look back to my younger years and the kind of movies that were produced, it just makes me laugh so hard. But the fact remains that Nollywood contributed to making my childhood a memorable one.
There have been some constant faces on our screens from the beginning of Nollywood that we can’t deny. This article intends to recognize consistency and commitment to one’s craft. In a field where they started with so many other actors, they have shown resilience.
Now we all know that Nollywood, like every other industry, comes with its own challenges. And that there seems to be some form of ongoing competition. But the industry keeps thriving. The Nigerian movie industry has been one part of this country that has been progressive over the years. This industry has produced a lot of talents that we would come to appreciate more over time.
Nollywood from time past has been remarkable and helped Nigerians and the world at large to not only stay entertained but also to touch on the same very sensitive and important issues to raise awareness and adjust where necessary. From history, we can see that the industry has grown exponentially. As much as some people will beg to differ by making comments like “God forbid, I’ll never use my money to watch Nigerian film. It reduces IQ”, there is very visible progress.
Given the fact that a lot of actors have faded out of the limelight because of various reasons ranging from marriage, personal choices or their brands just weren’t selling or even death. It is really commendable to see that a number of actors have remained consistent with their craft and made something really meaningful with their opportunities and privileges of being among the pioneers of Nollywood.
Most of these actors have been here from the era when we relied on video cassettes and VCD or DVD copies of films to get our fill of Nollywood. They’re still here when the movies are tailored for cinema and international film festivals.
This competition is not entirely negative. It’s totally normal in life that you have to work hard and prove that you deserve something, in this case, fame.
These actors have shown to us time and time again they belong in Nollywood and they know what they’re doing. Below are some of these Nollywood vintage actors.
Nollywood Vintage: Genevieve Nnaji
She is Nigerian’s sweetheart. She has always been there from the beginning. We’ve literally seen her craft progress. If there’s one thing this goddess has taught us, it’s that hard work will always pay off. Consistency is key in life. You don’t just wake up and become an overnight success (except for very few cases) but you get my point.
She made her debut in the Nigerian film industry in 1998 at the age of 19 in the movie “Most Wanted”. Since then, she has starred in approximately 100 films. She has become a household name as she has done exceptionally well. Coupled with her killer looks, she definitely got our attention and that hasn’t changed.
Over the years, she has worn more caps asides from acting, she opened her fashion line, she’s also a singer. In general, she has played important roles at very different times. Back then, she was popularly known for her playing lover girl with her screen prince charming, Ramsey Nouah. She recently directed and starred in the movie, Lionheart. A movie that Netflix bought reportedly raising her net worth. We surely love to see her grow.
Ramsey Nouah could very much be described as one of the most familiar faces in Nollywood. He has managed a feat that not many actors can boast of, maintaining a successful career in the two distinct phases of Nollywood.
The fine man majorly took roles on romantic movies and quickly got the persistent label “Lover Boy” which some fans still call him till date. Ramsey was definitely our prince charming in Nigeria. His romance movies with Genevieve were my favorite. You could just see the talent at it’s best. Luckily, Ramsey is still blessing us with his talent till date.
Since his debut in the 1980s, the veteran actor is seen as one of the most talented in the game. He has surprised us in more ways than one. He majorly starred as a cultist in the old movies which he did so well that people began to think he was a real-life cultist. He’s seen as the father of Nollywood.
Widely respected and appreciated, he is indeed proof that there’s no timeline to anything in life. It’s never too late to be anything. Edochie has evolved with Nollywood and now stars in movies that are top-notch like Lionheart.
Patience Ozokwor is popularly known as Mama G. We all know Mama G for her devious and really vicious mother-in-law roles in movies back then. For a really long time, I didn’t know her real name. I only knew her as Lebechi from the movie ‘Submission’. Just Wow! She really had us believing that she was actually that wicked in real life. Close friends have actually reported that the woman is something completely different from the roles she played.
Recently, she casts in movies as anything other than a witch or evil mother-in-law and she still kills it. A true talent, I stan!
Nkem Owoh is a Nigerian and comedian. He is one of the most popular and accomplished people in Nollywood due to his comical personality. He became popularly known as “ukwa” in the movie Ukwa and then “Osuofia“. Nkem is definitely an actor we enjoy on our screen.
In conclusion, it’s been a long time coming for Nollywood and we deserve all the global recognition we’re getting. A lot of thought and sweat has gone in trying to make quality movie. Talking about the casts, producers, directors even technology. In writing, this article, I remember the heroes and legends we’ve lost on this journey and we celebrate them. I realize that there are a handful of actors that have never failed to disappoint and we can say we’re proud of what they’ve become in the industry.
I only mentioned very few before anyone will come for me. I’d be delighted to see your faves and their movie that resonates most with you.
