COVID-19: NMA Shares Tragic News
The Nigerian medical association, NMA Lagos state chapter has announced to its members that the strike has been called off.
The NMA Lagos state chapter chairman, Dr Saliu Oseni in a meeting with reporters on Thursday, revealed this. The doctor said the strike was called off after he had several meetings with the police command in the state and the Lagos state government.
The stay-at-home order had been given to the doctors and health care professionals by the NMA chairman on Wednesday after they had received complaints of a series of harassments on their members by the Lagos state police force.
The statement that was released said the Lagos state police commissioner, Mr Hakeem Odumosu had been issuing orders conflicting to that of the federal and state government in the exemption of essential workers in the lockdown enforcement. The statement said the doctors and healthcare professionals were harassed repeatedly by men of the police force tasked with enforcing the lockdown, up to the point that even ambulances carrying patients with emergency cases were impounded for violating lockdown orders.
The NMA members were advised to commence the strike action indefinitely from 6 pm on Wednesday 20th May, but the strike has now been called off after a resolve with all the parties involved.
