The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has reacted to the new electricity tariff in the country.
Speaking on behalf of the union, President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba accused the federal government of acting elusive of the current realities.
The union leader noted that some other countries are giving palliatives to cushion the effect of the economic hardship on citizens occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic while the Nigerian government announced new electricity tariff.
Wabba opined that there is an element of deceit in the policy since the technical committee set after the November 2020 increment was still working.
You will recall that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, announced new electricity tariff barely two months after the much-opposed electricity hike in 2020.
It was gathered that the NERC approved over 50 per cent hike in electricity tariff payable by customers of the eleven Distribution Companies, DisCos.
This was contained in a revised Multi-Year Tariff Order signed by the new Chairman of NERC, Engr. Sanusi Garba, on December 30, 2020 (read more here).
