Nigeria’s moral issues are governed by so many loopholes, such as religious instability (Boko haram) and poor respect for property (Fulani herdsmen). There are also social misconducts (#Sexforgrades), political corruption (swallowed money by snakes and gorillas), and the misconducts of SMEs (fake copyrights ownerships, fake dispenser water, fake drinks, and other products). Talk about bribery and corruption amongst civil societies or the high level of plagiarism in our educational system. The list is endless.
We are aware of these things already! No need to detail on these issues anymore but rather the causes and profer a change. We need to understand why these issues occur. What circumstances? What triggers them? How it affects our international relations? Our citizens abroad? Our country’s name. What do we do?
Many journalists have spoken on our failed morality system, however, the real problem comes from some of the Nigerian citizens who mostly complain without actions.
It is wrong to blame the government as the cause of our problems entirely. To be a leader you must understand society and understand leadership. One must have experienced being part of society.
The ideology that actions speak louder than words is indeed very true. We have to adopt it. This also projects that morality should be curbed amongst ourselves as individuals and in our daily lives first before we complain. Is it a man who complains that fulani herdsmen are taking over the country and goes back home to sleep with his housemaid? Or a man who paid a young girl he impregnated to abort and governs a church? Or a mother who advises her son to study hard and sells fake products to people in full notice?
These immoral acts are all driven by individual self-interest. This is where immorality needs to be curbed, the ordinary man! Also, the idea that nobody can become somebody tomorrow is very true. Imagine any of these average citizens are put in power in the long run? What happens? The power of self-interest and survival takes over. More crimes will be held because everyman is for himself, this takes Nigeria back to scratch.
The morality system collapses in a revolving circle. The truth of the matter is that most nations are bonded with self-interest and the rule of law. However, in Nigeria, our governing rules are abused on the steady, even by the people in power. It’s more like a society that beds with tyranny. This entirely doesn’t make our state-men or leaders the ones at fault here.
All men are wicked and they will give vent to the malignity that is in their minds when opportunities offers
Niccolo Machiavelli
Well, this is quite simple: hardship, insecurity and a poor health sector, not to mention a low standard of living of 10 years in a row. Did you know that since the 2007 yearly est, the CIA World Fact-book still says 70 percent of the Nigerian population still live under poverty? Repeatedly, we are bounded by self-interest and desire – the theory that we do what we desire and not what is morally acceptable. The epiphany of ten thousand men’s hardship and poverty is the reason for another man’s success.
It is interesting to say that behind every country’s wealth and success are the policies that provide great possibilities, the people that drive the efforts and the history, the environment and perspective. Nigeria has these attributes, although internationally it is not seen to be at its best. Due to circumstances that dent the image of the nation as Africa’s leading economy. A total denial.
The behavioral culture of an average Nigerian equals the culture of its government practice internationally. Nigeria cannot be seen as a trustworthy country, or a leading peaceful nation given its religious views, practices, and values. Which is a cause of terrorism activities and insurgency over the past years, in some cases heart-trenching memories still prevail?
A 2019 statistics have shown that Nigeria’s citizenship is as low as 0.1 percent; titled 2019 best countries ranking, by the United States news and world report. After weighing 80 countries this year, Nigeria’s citizenship ranks number 77 out of 80. Given poor percentages in moral areas that govern its citizenship.
There is a need to understand the power of international relations and their impact on the world. This makes Nigeria a big part of it. There are new world models, breaking it down to the continent Africa. Nigerian citizenships and leaders, unlike the United States, aren’t formulating the best beliefs, respect, and ethics of Africans worldwide. Only a few good Nigerians do these things. Nigeria is the eye of Africa, no doubt.
Nigeria undoubtedly has tried in creating good alliances across its nation with the American, European, Asian and other African nations. Given its collaborations with the USIP, United States Institute of Peace, 2016, improving the state of its insecurity. The USIP and some Nigerian leaders held a symposium on creating strategies on violence in extremism.
Nigeria’s strong international alliances are currently estimated to be 0.4 percent and its entrepreneurship rate connected to the world is just about 0.7 percent. No doubt, this is not too remarkable on track, but it is. However, more works from Nigeria in global relations could keep Africa in a better place.
The anonymous man
Interviewing a Nigerian man in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus reveals the way Nigerians are treated based on the actions of past Nigerians. Nigerians are not allowed to own bank accounts in banks like Turkish Bankasi, North West, Zirat Bankasi and many others due to lots of fraudulent/419 cases attached to Nigerians.
This however also led to the banning of black people generally from banking in some of the Turkish banks. This, however, puts the bank on a tough spot to pay its customers with untraceable links to these criminal activities caused. What about other Africans who aren’t Nigerians? Also, innocent Nigerians are really suffering in this part of the world. People who came all in the name of a greener pasture are having a share of a cake that’s not theirs.
A female Nigerian student who schools at the European University of Lefke describes her stay to be terrifying. The young lady, who is an ulcer patient had an injury and was taken to her assigned hospital after a doctor’s prescription. The young lady wasn’t treated on time by supposed nurses due to hatred or should I call it racism! The young woman shares light on how Nigerian men have been raping Turkish women and how it has become a tit for tat scenario now. Therefore, these people turn and react in different ways.
Asides Turkey, there are many other countries Nigerians have shown themselves. The Xenophobic acts in South Africa were totally in-humane! Sadly, these people were triggered by something some Nigerians had done. However this may seem, it creates problems for other innocent citizens outside the country. This is why the question of morality shall not be totally judged on the failing sectors of the economy or the state actors of the Nigerian society. It should be directed to that average Nigerian person that could be in a better position tomorrow! How are we living our lives when the cameras are off? This is something that needs a loudmouth.
Ending crime rates or impacting morality as 100 percent is completely unrealistic. We can only try to reduce it by the power of practice and awareness. The power of communication on social media and the media itself is increasingly becoming a universal norm.
The moral system in Nigeria should be impacted in our daily lives, from teaching morality in schools as a subject to companies making it part of their cooperate social responsibility, and our leaders practicing it out in the open. The government should also ensure that punishments of immorality, either domestically or internationally, are assigned to the proposed criminal. This puts Nigeria and its citizens as pacesetters of morality in Africa and the world.
