Men of the Nigerian police have arrested four journalists in Delta state on Tuesday according to reports coming out from the state.
The Nigerian Policemen suspected to be detectives from the force headquarters in the state arrested a Mr Omonigho Matthew, a reporter with the Daily Post at the NUJ Press Centre in Warri, Delta state at about 3:45 pm without revealing the crime he had been detained for.
When the information got to the NUJ leadership in the state, three other journalists were sent to inquire about the arrest of their member. A freelancer, Mr Christopher Odomhe, Mr Edeki Igafe who works with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and BusinessDay’s Mr Francis Sadare were sent to the Warri Police Area Command, and on getting there were also detained by men of the Nigerian police and relieved of their phones without saying their reasons.
The Chairman of NUJ in Delta state, Mr Michael Ikeogwu has however assured reporters that efforts to release the men held were being carried out earnestly, with the chairman saying he has reached to the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Hafiz Inuwa who said he will not rest until the journalists were released.
