NIGERIAN POET, GABRIEL OKARA, DIES A 97


Nigerian Poet, Gabriel Okara, the self-educated poet dies at 97. Gabriel born in April 21, 1921 in Bumondi, Yenogoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria, Nigerian Poet, Gabriel Okara, the self-educated poet dies at 97. Born in April 21, 1921 in Bumondi, Yenogoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria, started off as a book binder and subsequently began writing plays and poems.

He has lots of his verses translated in various languages in the 1960’s. More so, he was also the first Modernist poet Anglophone Africa.

Some of his work include;

  1. The Voice (1964)
  2. The Fisherman’s Dream (1978)
  3. The Dreamer, His Vision (2005)

Okara drew inspiration from the African Thought in all of his poems and prose. He is referred to as ” the Nigerian Negritudist”

He died in his sleep at his residence in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State.
