Nigerian Celebrities these days can’t just wait to queue up for movie roles. The show-business in Nigeria has seen many of the Nigerian celebrities involved in the movie-making industry called ‘Nollywood’. It is no longer news that Nollywood i.e. the Nigerian movie industry is among the top 3 movie producing industry in the world. All these movies produced in recent times have featured many popular faces in the society that do not have acting as a career. Why this set of people in the Nigerian society jump to be featured in movies is a question that needs to be answered.

Who is a Celebrity?

A celebrity is one whose fame and public attention is accorded by the mass media to individuals or groups (couples, families, etc.). Celebrity status is often associated with wealth (which is referred to fame and fortune), while fame through entertainment is commonly associated with celebrity status. People may also become celebrities as a result of media attention on their lifestyle, wealth, or controversial actions, or for their connection to a famous person. Some politicians with lots of financial resources, public and media attention may also be regarded as celebrities.

The Nigerian celebrities often called ‘celebs’ by Nigerians can be found in many fields. Majority of these Nigerian celebrities are found in entertainment as Nigerians are fun-loving people. The long list of Nigerian celebrities includes the popular musicians, movie stars, politicians, reality TV show stars, sportsmen and women, OAPs (TV and Radio Presenters), Controversial persons (e.g. Transgender), internet celebrities, and so on. These set of people have featured in the Nigerian entertainment industry which is one sector the nation has seen development in recent times.

Once you have garnered more followers and have your name mentioned often in the Nigerian social media space, then you have attained the status of celebrity especially in this part of the world. The next thing is to get a movie role even if it is a scene and add to your bio (as an actor or actress). This is another way of becoming more famous in this part of the world.   • Bobrisky (Transgender, Beautician): The popular Nigerian transgender/crossdresser, Bobrisky has featured in several Nigerian movies. He has been used in the roles of crossdresser in many movies which he has acted well. Among the movies he featured include ‘Ojuloge Obirin’, ‘Skin’,‘The ghost and the Tout’, ‘Bobrisky in Love’ and so on.
  • Simi (Songstress): Nigerian songstress and wife of Nigeria pop singer, Adekunle Gold has also been featured in a Nigerian movie. She has followed the footstep of other musicians such as King Sunny Ade,Onyeka Onwenu, 2face, Tiwa Savage, Phyno, Olamide, Eldee, and several others who have featured in one movie or the other. The sonorous voice singer was featured in Kunle Afolayan’s movie titled ‘Mokalik’. She is just one of the several celebrities that has featured in Nollywood.
  • Mompha (Internet star): The name ‘Mompha’ is very popular to the users of social media especially Instagram in Nigeria. He’s known to display is riches and wealth by posting photos and videos of his lifestyle. He has garnered many followers as people look up to him (mainly because of his numerous giveaways). The internet star was arrested by the EFCC in 2019 for cases of internet fraud but has since been bailed. He’s to debut in a new skit by comedian/actor, Broda Shaggi.
  • Toke Makinwa (OAP): The popular Nigerian radio personality, TV host, vlogger, and lifestyle entrepreneur has added acting to her CV. The beauty queen has blessed the screen just like few other OAPs such as Simi Adejumo, Nedu, Daddy Freeze and so on. She made her Nollywood debut in the comedy movie titled ‘Makate Must Sell’.
  • Mercy Eke (Reality TV show star): The winner of the 2019 Big Brother Naija, Mercy Eke is to debut in the new series of ‘Alakada’, a star-studded Nollywood movie by Toyin Abraham. Mercy, who has the beauty and brain will add to her CV as the reality star and fashionista as an actress. She will be one of Big Brother Reality TV show stars to have been drafted to Nollywood. Others are Bisola Aiyeola, Sir Dee, Khafi, and so on.

Why Feature Nigerian Celebrities in Movies?

This is very simple. Nigerian celebrities are dragged into Nollywood movies for more sales. This is purely shows-business and this move has worked magic for tthem over time. Many can’t wait to see their favorite celebrity on set, they’ll do all they can to see them in action. This has really improved the industry as many of the blockbusters and high grossing movies produced by Nigerians has featured major celebrities.

If churches and other social gatherings can make use of Nigerian celebrities to attract more people, then the screen will definitely do more. So the reason we cannot but see celebrities longing to take up roles in the movie industry (Nollywood) and get more popularity. No wonder, ‘Zanku’ creator, Zlatan Ibile has pleaded to get a role in Funke Akindele’s ‘Jenifa’s Diary’ Lol!
