Located in the Southeastern state of Imo is the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport. It is also known as Imo State Airport. The airport is named in honor of a former governor and politician-philanthropist, the late chief Sam Mbakwe of Imo State. It is the first airport built by a state government in Nigeria. It was built by the military governor of the state in 1990-1992, Navy Commodore Anthony. E. Oguguo. It was later taken over by the federal government. The airport is owned and operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport serves Owerri, the capital of Imo state, and its neighboring cities, such as Aba, Nnewi and so on.
The airport’s runway direction is 17/35. It is surface dressed with asphalt and is 2,700m in length and 8,858 by ft.
The Owerri VOR-DME (Ident: OWR) is located 1.3 nautical miles (2.4km) north of the airport. The Owerri non-directional beacon (Ident: OW) is located 1.3 nautical miles (2.4km) south of the airport.
The airport is strategically located to serve the state capital, Owerri, the commercial city of Onitsha, the automobile and manufacturing city of Nnewi, and the industrial hub of Aba, Umuahia, etc. It also serves the South-south states of Akwa Ibom and Cross River. As a cargo airport, it is of huge importance for business activities across the country.
