One of the major airlines plying Nigerian Airports is Aero Contractors. It can also be simply called Aero. It is a state-controlled Nigerian airline company which has its headquarters at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. The airline operates helicopter services and fixed domestic and international scheduled passenger services, air charter and third party aircraft operations. This is largely in support of Nigeria’s extensive oil and gas industry. Aero Contractors was founded in 1959 and it recently celebrated its 60 years of existence. The company slogan, which is written on its aircraft, is ‘The reliable way to fly.’’
The Aero Contractors fleet is seven in number. They are as follows: Boeing 737-400, Boeing 737-500 (2), De Havilland Dash 8-Q200, De Havilland Dash 8-Q30, and De Havilland Dash 8-Q400 (2).
Aero Contractor was formerly owned by the Ibru family. Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) now owns 60% of the shares, with the remaining 40% going to the Ibru family interest.
The airline has two divisions. They are Aero Nigeria, which provides scheduled passenger services in Nigeria and West Africa, and Rotary Wing which provides helicopter services for the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.
This airline serves 13 destinations across Nigeria. They are Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (Abuja), Asaba International Airport (Asaba), Benin Airport (Benin City), Margaret Ekpo International Airport (Calabar), and Kaduna Airport (Kaduna). Others are Aminu Kano Airport (Kano), Akanu Ibiam International Airport (Enugu), Murtala Mohammed International Airport (Lagos), Imo Airport (Owerri), Port Harcourt Airport (Port Harcourt), Akwa Ibom Airport (Uyo), and Sadiq Abubakar International Airport (Sokoto).
