Nigeria Kick Start 2021 AFCON With Victory Over Benin

Nigeria kick starts their 2021 AFCON campaign in style as they humbled the Squirrels in the legendary Uyo Stadium yesterday evening. Other African countries are surely getting the message that the Nigerian soccer team is sending. The Super Eagles of Nigeria did well to come from behind to nail the victory and win the heart of the people.

Stephane Sessegnon led the attack of the away team giving them an early win in the game, the away team capitalized on a defensive error to get the opener. The Super Eagles dominated the whole game right from the first half to the second. Nigerian point man Victor Osimhen gave the equalizer from the penalty spot and leveled the game before half time.

Benin Republic Coach Applauds Nigeria For the Game

“The second half was very hard for us and we wasted many balls, gave it to Nigeria so many times. In the end, we tried to recover after conceding and we had an opportunity (which hit the post) but it is logical. There’s a difference between Nigeria and Benin but we have fought for as much as we can”. The head coach also said if they play the way they played against Nigeria against the other two teams in Group L, they will come out victorious. 2021 AFCON, qualifier encounter on Wednesday.

The Head coach of Nigeria Dussuyer, Gernot Rohr also commented on his team’s performance. He said the Super Eagles created many opportunities in the first half but could not convert to give them victories. The first goal that came was a relief for the whole team and it was a good thing Victor Osimhen was able to convert the penalty.

Head Coach of Nigeria on the Match

Adding to this, he said: “We played well in the first half, defended well, and created many opportunities. The penalty just before the half time gave more confidence to Nigeria in the second half,”. Dussuyer told reporters at his post-match press conference in Uyo.

“The guys from Benin Republic are a good team. We knew what they did in the AFCON but our attitude was good,”. Rohr told reporters in his post-match press conference. “I am happy with the result; to come back from behind and win. Good to see competitions among the players”.

The head coach also commented on the hospitality of the Nation. “We are good everywhere in Nigeria. We had good hospitality in Asaba, but it feels good to be back in Uyo,” Rohr added.

Nigeria will now travel to Lesotho on Sunday to continue its 2021 AFCON campaign. However, one thing the fans are really not happy with is the commentary and the video quality. It was very poor and looked ancient. The video coverage spoilt the fun of the game as many high lights in the game were not captured.

In the commentary, we heard “2 goals for the Super Eagles and 1 goal to Nigeria”. The match clearly showed us that we really need to upgrade our cables if we want people outside Nigeria to view our matches. We wish the Super Eagles of Nigeria victory in their next game and also the remaining matches in the campaign.
