On Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari flagged off the new Nigeria to Niger rail line, valued at about 1.9 billion dollars. This rail project is supposed to open up a wealth of possibilities between both countries and beyond.

New Nigeria to Niger rail earns Buhari criticism

Despite what is supposed to be a strategic infrastructural development, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) have called out the President, faulting the commissioning of such a project when there is an obvious need for things like railways, bridges, roads and others within the country.

Reacting to the new Nigeria to Niger rail line, HURIWA questioned the President’s patriotism and said he should be building infrastructure for Nigeria and not for other countries.

In a statement by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf, the rights group advised the President to build functional rial lines in the Southern part of the country as there are none in that region.

They summarily called this latest investment by the Federal Government an “illegal expenditure of over a billion United States dollars.”
