NDDC Probe : Nigerian Students Are Virtually Beggars In UK – Abike Dabiri-Erewa

Chairman of NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa has appealed to Sen. Godswill Akpabio to release funds for students in the UK amidst NDDC probe.

The chairman of Nigerian in Diaspora Commission NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made this statement in an appeal to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in light of the recent probe to give students in Diaspora their allowances, tuition, and other incentives for students on the scholarship scheme in the United Kingdom.

The revelation that Nigerian students that have been awarded scholarships to schools in the UK have not receives any form of financial support in ages came up during the recent NDDC probe by the National Assembly. Some students complained saying that the commission has ignored their emails and pleas to release the funds due to them in allowance and tuition, leaving them stranded in a foreign land.

Dabiri-Erewa released her statement through the NIDCOM spokesperson, Gabriel Odu, appealing for the appropriated funds to be released to the students in Diaspora as it was a matter of urgency.

Abike refered to a letter written to Sen. Godswill Akpabio, Minister of the Niger Delta on June 18 that highlighted the need to pay the students their due to avoid leaving them stranded.

Her statement reads in part,


“At the moment there have been persistent calls by the students for urgent intervention. While deadline for payment of the fees of some of the students have expired or about to expire, non payment of their allowances have turned many of them to virtually become beggars.”
