MTN Nigeria Losing Subscribers, Gives Reasons

MTN Nigeria has revealed why its customers/subscribers’ base has been reducing drastically, especially since a study confirms this claim.

On Thursday, the telecommunication company hinted that the country’s new regulations for Subscriber Identity Module, SIM Registration is negatively affecting their business.

Recall that the Nigerian Government had directed all telecommunication companies to register their customers to the National Identity Number, NIN database, an exercise it said will help curb insecurity, fraud, and cyber-crimes.

The company noted that while the directive is a welcomed development to curb cyber-crime, it has, on the other hand, affected their target for the third quarter of this year.

They stated that the telecom outfit struggled to deliver solid operational services and finance performance amidst the user reductions encountered.

However, the group said that against the reduced subscription figure in Nigeria, where it has a significant market base, it has managed to obtain over a million users in other parts where their services are operational.

“Excluding Nigeria, total subscribers were up by 1.6 million,” the MTN Group said.
