The head of, World Health Organization, WHO emergencies program, Dr. Mike Ryan has described Coronavirus, COVID-19 outbreak as a “wake-up call” noting that the outbreak is not necessarily the big one.
Speaking during a media briefing, Ryan said though the pandemic has been very severe and has affected every corner of the world, he, however, warned that a more deadly virus could yet sweep the globe.
According to Dr. Ryan, countries around the world have learned how to do things better in terms of science, logistics, training, governance, and communication.
Ryan added that despite the tragedy and loss caused by the pandemic, countries around the world need to get their act together and honor those who have died as a result of the virus by getting better every day.
Meanwhile, the WHO official said that the virus was likely to remain part of human lives despite the introduction of vaccines adding that the likely scenario is that the COVID-19 virus will become another endemic virus that will remain a threat.
He stressed that the existence of a high efficacy vaccine is no guarantee of eliminating or eradicating the infectious disease.
However, the chairman of the WHO’s strategic and technical advisory group for infectious hazards, Professor David Heymann revealed that it was the destiny’ of the virus to become endemic.
As of the time of filing this report, Coronavirus has so far killed 1,799, 337 people globally.
